Mechanical Department
The Department of Mechanical Engineering is supported by a comprehensive range of well-equipped laboratories and workshop facilities that provide students with a strong foundation in practical engineering and technical skills. These facilities are designed to complement classroom learning with meaningful hands-on experience, enabling students to understand the practical application of mechanical engineering principles.
The laboratories cover major areas of Mechanical Engineering including Manufacturing Processes, Machine Tools and Metrology, Engineering Mechanics, Theory of Machines, Thermal Engineering, Heat Transfer, Refrigeration, Fluid Mechanics, Hydraulic Machinery, Materials Testing, Mechatronics, Computer-Aided Design and Engineering Simulation. The facilities include Modern Experimental Setups, Conventional and Advanced Machines, Measurement Instruments, Computer Systems, Engineering Software, and Other Supporting Equipment.
Students are encouraged to learn through experimentation, observation, analysis, problem-solving, and practical application. The laboratories provide an environment where students can develop confidence in operating engineering equipment, interpreting experimental results, understanding industrial practices, and applying theoretical concepts to real-world engineering problems.
The facilities also support laboratory courses, mini projects, major projects, design activities, skill development, and innovative student learning. Through regular practical sessions and project-based activities, students gain exposure to engineering methods and technologies that contribute to their professional and technical development.
With a focus on practical learning, innovation, safety, and skill development, the departmental laboratories provide students with a conducive environment to explore, experiment, and transform engineering concepts into practical solutions.

Preventive Maintenance of Laboratories
Preventive maintenance is carried out periodically to minimize breakdowns and maintain laboratory equipment in proper working condition.
- Laboratory equipment, machines, instruments, electrical installations, and supporting facilities are inspected periodically.
- Preventive maintenance schedules are prepared and followed for equipment and laboratory utilities.
- Routine activities such as cleaning, lubrication, tightening, alignment, calibration, and necessary adjustments are carried out wherever required.
- Electrical cables, switches, sockets, motors, control panels, protective devices, and earthing systems are periodically checked for safe operation.
- Hydraulic, pneumatic, thermal, fluid-flow, refrigeration, and other utility systems are inspected for leakage, pressure, temperature, insulation, and proper functioning, wherever applicable.
- Preventive maintenance activities are recorded in the Maintenance Register, indicating the date, equipment details, maintenance carried out, person responsible, observations, and remarks.
Corrective Maintenance of Laboratories
Corrective maintenance is undertaken whenever a fault, malfunction, or breakdown is reported. Necessary repair or replacement is carried out to restore the equipment to satisfactory working condition.
- Faults and breakdowns in laboratory equipment are attended to promptly.
- Defective mechanical components are repaired or replaced as required.
- Electrical faults involving cables, switches, motors, control panels, connections, and protective devices are identified and rectified.
- Abnormal noise, vibration, overheating, leakage, pressure variation, or irregular operation is investigated and corrected.
- Damaged or worn-out tools, accessories, components, and replaceable parts are replaced wherever necessary.
- Faults related to hydraulic, pneumatic, thermal, fluid-flow, or refrigeration systems are rectified, wherever applicable.
- After servicing or repair, equipment is tested and verified for satisfactory operation before being put back into regular use.
- Corrective maintenance and servicing details are recorded in the Service/Repair Register, including the fault identified, corrective action taken, date, person responsible, and remarks.
Role of Lab Assistant in Lab Maintenance
- At the end of each academic year, the lab assistant inspects all laboratory equipment to ensure proper working condition.
- Minor faults identified in the equipment are rectified by the lab assistant promptly.
- In case of major faults, qualified service technicians are contacted for necessary maintenance and repair.
- Basic maintenance lab records are maintained for reference and audit purposes.
- The Lab assistant ensures that all laboratories are kept clean, safe, and dust-free working environment.
